I wanted to write a song capturing the sensory elements of an ideal Christmas Eve, and the feeling just before going to sleep on that night. This is also one of the few times I've created a song with the words first, and wrote music for it afterward.

Left some milk and cookies
The fireplace dimly glows
Warmth from embers orange and red
While right outside it snows
Ornaments hung from the tree
Do sparkle in the light
Scent of pine still lingers there
It is a special night

Christmas cards have all been sent
"Season's Greetings" they say
Those we have, ourselves, received
Line mantles on display
There's a space beneath the tree
Where presents will be soon
Go to the window, look up high,
A sleigh flies past the moon

We wish for health and happiness
For old ways changed to new
And try to give a little more
Just as we all should do

Cozy blankets, off to bed
Yet as I close my eyes
I still hear carols in my head
And taste those apple pies
Waiting, searching, all month long
For this one small reprieve
A deep breath in, I go to sleep
Why yes, it's Christmas Eve...
